CLAT exam details
Common Law Admission Test (CLAT) is a national level entrance exam conducted for admission to 21 prominent National Law Universities in India and other private universities. One who qualifies in CLAT can seek admission in 3-year/5-year Integrated LLB and LLM programmes.
The CLAT exam is conducted once in a year by the National Law University (NLU) among the 21 members NLUs of the CLAT Committee. The CLAT scores are used by other private law colleges across the country and Public Sector Undertakings for admissions and recruitment respectively.
Till 2018, CLAT was conducted on a rotation basis by NLUs. However, from 2019 onwards the CLAT will be conducted by a permanent body, ''Consortium of NLUs'' formed by NLUs. The body has its headquarters at NLSIU Bangalore.

CLAT Eligibility Criteria
Undergraduate
- The is no upper age limit for undergraduate programmes in CLAT 2022.
- Candidates should obtain at least 45% marks or its equivalent grade in case of candidates belonging to General / OBC / PWD / NRI / PIO / OCI categories in the 10+2 or its equivalent examination. It is 40% for the candidates belonging to SC/ST categories.
- Candidates who are appearing in the qualifying examination in March/April 2022 are eligible to appear for CLAT 2022 Examination. However, they shall be required to produce an evidence if their passing the qualifying examination at the time of admission.
Postgraduate
- An LLB degree or its equivalent with 50% of marks is required to apply CLAT postgraduate examination. It is 45% of marks for candidates belonging to SC/ST categories.
- Candidates appearing for the qualifying examination in April / May 2022 are also eligible to apply online.
- There is no age limit for appearing in CLAT 2022.
CLAT Application Form
Candidates who are seeking admission to law courses in the NLUs and other private universities should register online through the official website of CLAT. Here are the steps to CLAT application form online.
Step 1: Visit the official website of CLAT Consortium of NLU – www.clatconsortiumofnlu.ac.in
Step 2: On the homepage, click on the 'Register'
Step 3: Fill in the basic details such as name, mobile number and email address.
Step 4: Upload the required documents that include the photograph and signature.
Step 5: Complete all the mandatory fields in the CLAT application form such as qualification and preference for NLUs.
Step 6: Pay the prescribed CLAT application fee
Step 7: Submit the application form
Step 8: Download the soft copy and take a printout for future reference.
CLAT Application Fee
- Application Fees can be paid only online.
- Application Fee for General / OBC / PWD / NRI / PIO / OCI Candidates : Rs. 4,000/-.
- Application Fee for SC / ST / BPL Category Candidates: Rs. 3,500/-.
- The cost of previous years' question papers is Rs. 500/- (not included in the CLAT 2022 Application fee of Rs. 4,000/- or Rs. 3,500/- as the case may be.)
- The candidates themselves will have to bear the bank transaction charges for remitting the fee online. The actual bank transaction charges will be displayed in the payment gateway page after you choose the mode of payment.
- Application Fees is non-refundable.
CLAT Exam Pattern
The CLAT will be conducted in offline mode. It is an objective-paper and the total duration is two hours. Each correct answer will be awarded one mark and 0.25 mark will be deducted for incorrect answer. The examination will be conducted in English language only.

CLAT Syllabus
The CLAT syllabus covers different subject areas to test the candidates' proficiency in English, general awareness on static GK, basic calculation, critical thinking ability in logical reasoning and legal aptitude. Most of the sections are well known to many candidates except the legal aptitude. This section tests the candidate's on the study of law, research aptitude and problem-solving ability.
